This issue of the Journal brings together articles from New Zealand/Aotearoa, Thailand, South Africa, Canada, Australia and the UK. There are some familiar themes and, in the context of greater emphasis being given to programme evaluation, a number stress the importance of developing systematic processes of assessment. Others, in their different ways, pick up on issues emerging from the forces of globalization, such as migration and regional development or social cohesion in fractured communities. While others remind us of the need for thoughtful interventions built on the principles of development and good training and education.
