Field notes

This is to be a regular feature in the Journal and a space for people working in and with communities to share their ‘thoughts from the field’. We are looking for contributions of about 500–1000 words from people who might not normally think of writing for an academic journal. This is an opportunity to share experience and ideas that come directly from practice. It can also provide a forum to reflect on their implications for theory and policy. At some stage it may be possible to develop a debate around particular themes, comparing approaches to common issues in different settings.
We invite short articles that describe a piece of practice or an example of community development. What happened? Who was involved? What was achieved? What were the problems? What was learnt from the experience? Are there any lessons for community development policies and practice elsewhere? We are especially interested in stories told by communities themselves or grassroots workers. Help can be provided with written English, and we may even be able to translate from other languages if this is easier for you.
Send contributions to Thara Raj (thara.raj{at}hda-online.org.uk) and Angus McCabe (A.J.McCabe{at}bham.ac.uk), who are both members of the Editorial Board.

This reflections piece challenges community development workers to engage, in more systematic ways, with environmental issues at a local, national and global level. It argues that only by adopting an eco-centric rationale will community development achieve the goals of sustainable communities and social justice.
