Civic networks in Bristol and Glasgow

Derrick Purdue, Mario Diani and Isobel Lindsay

Derrick Purdue is Research Fellow in the Cities Research Centre, University of the West of England and has published on social movements and community participation
Mario Diani is Professor of Sociology in the University of Trento as well as Visiting Research Professor in the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow and has published widely on social movements
Isobel Lindsay is Lecturer in Sociology in the Department of Geography and Sociology at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, and her publications include the voluntary sector and civil society in Scotland

Community development requires bringing together a range of civic organizations. In this article we explore the nature of the links between such organizations and the network dynamics of their alliances. We also examine the role of leadership and differences of culture and context in urban civil society between our two case study UK cities – Bristol and Glasgow.
